WILDLIFE ON BARRA Barra is a good island for wildlife enthusiasts. In late Spring and Early summer its machair west and north coasts are a riot of colour from the many wild flowers which grow on the sandy soils. Waders such as Oystercatchers are common, and Gannets may be seen fishing offshore. Terns nest in several locations, and Great Skuas may be seen. A glimpse of the rare Golden Eagle may also be had. Both Grey and Common Seals inhabit the waters and may be observed in Castlebay Harbour. The Minch also is home to several species of Ceteceans, including Risso's and other Dolphins, Killer Whales and Minke Whales any of which may be observed from the ferry.
