BARRA - ECONOMY

The modern Barra economy depends on fishing, tourism and crofting. Crofting is still important, particularly on Vatersay and at the north end of Barra. Fishing for crabs, lobsters, prawns and whitefish is a major source of employment, and much seafood is landed and transhipped. Tourism is also very important to the island.

Fishing remains a very important part of the local economy
Crofting is less important than previously
However there are still plenty of sheep
Barra also has quite a lot of cattle
